Congressman Wilson’s Wingnut Credentials

During the run-up to the invasion of Iraq and the debate over whether Saddam Hussein had re-constituted his WMD program, a photo surfaced showing him in a friendly and fateful 1983 meeting with Donald Rumsfeld. The Daily Mail wrote a contemporaneous article about how the US supplied various chemical weapon precursors to Saddam in advance of his US sponsored war with Iran, in which some 1 million soldiers were killed. The article was titled:

Rumsfeld ‘helped Iraq get chemical weapons

US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld helped Saddam Hussein build up his arsenal of deadly chemical and biological weapons, it was revealed last night.

As an envoy from President Reagan 19 years ago, he had a secret meeting with the Iraqi dictator and arranged enormous military assistance for his war with Iran…

Such is the context for the clip above showing Congressman Joe Wilson‘s diatribe against his then colleague, California Rep. Bob Filner for his “hatred of America.” Apparently Filner had the temerity to cite what the rest of the non-wingnut universe whimsically calls “reality.”

The new poster child for the wingut cause thus comes with excellent credentials. Blue Texan over at The Lake provides another, Wilson’s campaign to keep the Confederate flag a-flying:

Wilson was one of only seven members of the South Carolina Senate to vote to stick it to the blacks keep the battle flag. It was finally brought down under intense national pressure and from an NAACP boycott, which cost the state millions in tourism revenue.

The vulgar and unpatriotic displays of the wingers at town hall meetings over the summer have been pooh-pooed by Rethug Congressman as just the work of a few extremists. Nothing that they themselves would ever stoop to…
