Mourning In America

NRO asswipe John Derbyshire finds something to celebrate in the ecological and economic catastrophe unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico in an article titled No We Can’t.

After citing a controversial entry from The Oil Drum concerning the consequences of a “down hole” breach in the well casing, a distinct possibility, he indulges the most perverted display of schadenfreude
I’ve ever witnessed:

As the writer says: “The very least damaging outcome as bad as it is, is that we are stuck with a wide open gusher blowing out 150,000 barrels a day of raw oil or more.”

In slightly different words: The best we can hope for is that the thing just goes on gushing through the bore hole indefinitely. (Or until we can drill enough relief wells to reduce the pressure. Don’t hold your breath.)

I’m as horrified as anyone by this — if the guy has got it right, and I’ve understood him correctly. At the same time, as a constitutional pessimist, I’ll own to a certain grim satisfaction. The infantile optimism of post-JFK America may have met its match down there in the Gulf. Nature is not mocked

Take that, you dirty fucking hippy Kennedy idealists! Too bad it took an extinction level event to prove that your infantile hopey changey optimism is nothing but a sick joke. But it was worth it!

Whatever happened to conservative icon Ronald Reagan’s shining city on a hill? Must have been a cognitive misfire brought on by his creeping Alzheimer’s.

It’s one thing to be pessimistic about the condition of the planet these days,  it’s another to use the ongoing tragedy in the Gulf as an opportunity to flog progressives for trying to make it a better place to live.

So Mr. Derbyshire, and I mean this sincerely– Go fuck yourself!
