Got my June Issue of Apocalypse Magazine today, even though my subscription expired a year ago, there have been massive layoffs and firings of writers and staff, and the company is in receivership. Now ain’t that America for you and me. When I first subscribed, I didn’t realize that there was another meaning for the word apocalypse, product of popular culture that I am.
Isn’t revisiting the abuses of the last eight years, no matter how bad they were, a luxury we can’t afford?
No, it isn’t, because America is more than a collection of policies. We are, or at least we used to be, a nation of moral ideals. In the past, our government has sometimes done an imperfect job of upholding those ideals. But never before have our leaders so utterly betrayed everything our nation stands for. “This government does not torture people,” declared former President Bush, but it did, and all the world knows it.

All stupidity aside for now, our “distinctive values” are, of course, rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition; they inform all the morals and ethics that attend our decision making as individuals, and collectively as the will of the people. But is it the job of the Government to teach Americans morals, ethics, and values, as this collective mass of various biological tissue claims? or are we responsible as individuals? as Republican racists insist?
